Nicki Minaj Raps ‘My Old Tape Sold More Than Your Album’ on “Super Freaky Girl (Roman Remix)"

The cinematically prolific killer known as Michael Myers gets a mention in a new remix from Nicki Minaj, as does the sales performance of an “old tape.”

The track in question is “Super Freaky Girl (Roman Remix),” which arrived on Thursday and sees Nicki embodying her fan-adored Roman persona.

Tucked into the song’s final moments are some lyrics that have already started receiving attention, with Nicki/Roman moving from a Myers reference to a reflection on a 15-year career, as follows:

We’ll leave the deeper speculation regarding the bulk of that last line to the fans. The “old tape” in question, however, is presumably a nod to Nicki’s 2021 re-release of her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty. The re-release debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, with Nicki later thanking fans for helping the project make history. As Minaj explained in an IG-shared note at the time, what made this success “mean more” to her was the fact that it was done without the typical rollout expected of modern releases, i.e. TikTok strategies and video pushes, etc.

As announced earlier this month, Nicki will be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 28. Nicki is also slated to perform at the event, marking her first VMAs performance in four years.

“Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry,” Bruce Gillmer—President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events at Paramount and Chief Content Officer of Music at Paramount+—previously said of the honor. “She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style, and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki.’”
