Miley Cyrus shared her new single "Malibu" Thursday. She teased the track, which premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show, by releasing the cover art (featuring a photo snapped by Liam Hemsworth) Wednesday:
Cyrus also shared the single's official music video, directed by Cyrus and Diane Martel. Martel previously directed videos for Charli XCX, The 1975, Nicki Minaj, and many more.
In a Billboardinterview last week with John Norris, Cyrus revealed the exact moment she started writing the new single, which marks a noticeable departure from her previous project Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz and her 2013 hit Bangerz. "On the way to The Voice," Cyrus said. "I drive myself everywhere, but that day I decided to Uber, and I was trying not to sing out loud because someone else was in the car."
The new track is the first official single from Cyrus' forthcoming new album, which is set for release later this year. The album is described by Norris as Cyrus' "most DIY to date." Cyrus penned the collection's lyrics and melodies, while "Adore You" co-writer and producer Oren Yoel handled all the instruments.
Cyrus will give "Malibu" its debut TV performance at the Billboard Music Awards on May 21.
