mgk Recalls Being Kicked 'Out of the House' Over Drug Use in Newly Released 'Downfall'-Era Track

mgk kicks off a vault-opening return to his Tickets to My Downfall era with the release of new single “no cell phones in rehab,” featuring some lyrical reflections on the impact his drug use had on his home life.

While the track didn’t originally make the cut for his 2020 pop-punk project backed by blink-182’s Travis Barker, it's finding its own place now thanks to a fifth anniversary-commemorating revisiting of the chart-topping album dubbed Tickets to My Downfall (All Access). Produced by Barker, who also contributed drums and percussion, the first of several unreleased tracks set to be rolled out in the coming days finds mgk leading a “toast to the bad times” in the chorus.

In the second verse, the rapper-rocker-actor, who shares a daughter with “Bloody Valentine” music video star and Jennifer’s Body icon Megan Fox, reminisces on having “sex on the hotel steps” with an unnamed lover before lamenting being kicked “out of the house” when his drug use was found out.

Okay, we had sex on the hotel steps
Okay, I took a line, then I drew on the desk
My girl found out and kicked me out of the house
I can't kick the habit, I want more of it now

The artist has spoken at length, as well as written songs, about his sobriety struggles in the past. Speaking with Complex in his hometown of Cleveland in August, mgk said that Lost Americana, released that same month and boasting a “Semi-Charmed Life” flip, marks the first time he’s made an album “completely sober.”

To further commemorate five years of Downfall, mgk has shared an updated version of the original album’s cover art, as well as announced special anniversary performances as part of his imminent world tour.

Following “no cell phones in rehab,” additional vault tracks from the Barker-led Downfall sessions are set to be released each day this week.
