Jennie, whose debut solo album Ruby was met with worldwide adoration upon its release earlier this month, is the latest artist to be given the Complex cover star distinction. Tuesday, the BLACKPINK alum’s full conversation with Complex’s YJ Lee was released, just in time for her upcoming performance as part of the 2025 edition of Coachella.
Speaking on the approach she wanted to take with her solo debut, Jennie compared her writing process to how she navigates fashion. In that sense, Jennie set out to “make sure each song had its own character,” resulting in a genre-spanning listening experience that recently landed at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in its first week.
Still, Jennie makes it clear in her conversation with Complex that there’s “no need” for her to feel pressure as a solo artist following her years of success with her BLACKPINK bandmates who, like her, have also embarked on their own respective solo paths while still keeping BLACKPINK active with a soon-to-launch world tour.
As Jennie sees it, each member has experienced tremendous growth during their time together, no doubt a reality that faces any group of artists as the years start to stack up.
“We’ve grown and things have changed for us,” Jennie, who also referred to her bandmates as “family,” told Complex. “Now we all understand the boundary of wanting to be free, and we’re settling into that, which is so good. We’re so happy about it, and we want to do it well.”
