Jay-Z Calls for Sanctions, Dismissal After Disputed Rape Lawsuit

Jay previously referred to the accuser's lawyer as an "ambulance chaser in a cheap suit."

The lawsuit against Jay-Z and Diddy should be dismissed, so argues Jay’s legal team in recent court filings.

Per a report from Rolling Stone, the latest from Jay’s legal team, led by Alex Spiro, sees them calling for sanctions against the anonymous woman’s legal rep, Tony Buzbee. In short, they argue that Buzbee did not properly look into the accuser’s claims to determine their veracity, meaning the suit itself, in which Jay and Diddy were both accused of sexually assaulting a teen girl in 2000, should be dismissed.

Exhibits from the latest filings viewed by Complex see Jay’s legal team underscoring a number of details about the allegations, details they argue show multiple inconsistencies in the Jane Doe’s claims. Included among the exhibits are an Eminem performance on MTV circa 2000, an episode of The Chris Hansen Show featuring Buzbee, a Diddy-focused TMZ doc, and an NBC News interview with the accuser.

That interview saw the anonymous accuser admitting to having “made mistakes” when asked about the inconsistencies in her allegations. Jay, meanwhile, has denied the allegations, calling Buzbee a “fraud” and an “ambulance chaser in a cheap suit.” Diddy has also denied the suit's claims.

When reached for comment by Complex on Wednesday, Buzbee said, in part, that Jay’s legal team “reeks of desperation.”

Complex has also reached out to reps for Spiro for comment. This story may be updated. In December, Spiro emphasized what he argued was the implausibility of the allegations while also further accusing Buzbee of “taking advantage” of the situation.

“Mr. Carter has nothing to do with Mr. Combs’ case or Mr. Combs,” Spiro said at the time, adding that the two’s connections were strictly professional in nature.

Also in December, Jay's legal team accused Buzbee of engaging in misconduct, including alleged extortion. Buzbee denied the allegations. The suit is unrelated to Diddy’s racketeering and trafficking case, which ultimately led to the Bad Boy Records founder’s arrest last September. A trial is expected to begin later this year.
