Jackson Wang Opens Up About Personal Importance of ‘Magic Man’ Album in New Interview

In a newly unveiled Complex China cover story, Jackson Wang opens up about his desire to give fans his authentic self, including on his 'Magic Man' album.

Jackson Wang’s Magic Man, released last September to widespread acclaim, sees the Hong Kong multi-hyphenate giving fans the most in-depth look yet at who he truly is as an artist and all-around creative.

In a newly unveiled Complex China cover story, Jackson detailed the personal importance of his 10-track sophomore solo album, the title of which he says is intended to represent an “abstract meaning” for the listener.

Magic Man is an abstract meaning, just like you have experienced the peaks and troughs in your life,” Jackson told Complex China’s Oscar Law. “After this very magical journey, you will finally achieve a more complete self today and become your own Magic Man.”

Speaking more generally about a desire to show fans his authentic self, Jackson asserted that his artistic process stems from a deep-rooted desire to remain “real” in his work.

“I want my fans to know the most real Wang Jia’er, the Jackson Wang you support,” he said. “What the hell is it? Anyway, I want you to know a Wang Jia’er who will never wear a mask and will always remain real.”

With Magic Man, Jackson took a genre-spanning approach to the art form, resulting in a tightly constructed and decidedly bold collection that includes the singles “Blow” and “Cruel.” In December, Jackson rolled out the official video for Magic Man track “Come Alive,” directed by Rich Lee and penned/creative-directed by Jackson himself.
