There’s an overwhelming (and seemingly ever-expanding) variety of abject bullshit on social media these days. Just ask Ice Cube, who was tasked with letting fans know that a quote about Michael Jordan and LeBron James making the rounds on X and attributed to him is, in fact, a fake.
“This is not a quote from me,” Cube, whose latest album Man Up arrived in September, said in response to an X post from the @Hoopss account on Thursday (Dec. 5). The account, which has over 771,000 followers, one day earlier shared an update purporting that Cube had called comparisons between LeBron and Jordan “a joke.” The since-refuted quote was not sourced or otherwise provided with any actual context.
Cube later stressed the importance of calling out such bullshit in a follow-up post, this time spurred by someone urging him to “take the high road” instead.
“It’s the truth Tom,” the Rock Hall inductee said. “If you let people put words in your mouth they may want to put something else in your mouth next time. So be careful Tom.”
A fabricated quote about NBA legends isn’t the only thing Cube has been quick to call out as of late. In October, he advised staying out of his business when an X user argued that the official video for Man Up track “Act My Age” was a sign that he should “hang the mic up.” As Cube sees it, this individual suffers from a loss of their sense of humor.
“I would never listen to you and hang up my mic,” he said.
