Halsey Calls Out Meanness of Fans: 'I Regret Coming Back'

Halsey, whose new song "Lucky" arrived last month, says she regrets her return to a space that has failed to facilitate any sense of "human decency."

In an update to their Tumblr on Tuesday, the Grammy-nominated Columbia Records signee and recent Maxxxine co-star pointed to a meanness they say they’ve observed among their own fans as of late. As Halsey explained, being met with a lack of basic "kindness" makes her less inclined to participate.

"My own fans are hands down meaner to me than any other people on the planet. Not speaking for all of you, of course," Halsey, whose Britney Spears-tributing "Lucky" video was directed by Gia Coppola, wrote. "But it used to be just a minority that were awful to me and now it seems like a majority have only stuck around to chime in occasionally with their opinion of how much they hate me or how awful I am. It’s hard to want to engage in a space that is completely devoid of any kindness, sympathy, patience; or to be honest human decency."

As the If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power artist explained, the time she recently spent intentionally "hiding from the interactions" was due to her fear that the experience would be a bad one.

"I almost lost my life," they said, referencing a recently-made-public diagnosis of Lupus and a rare T-cell disorder. "I am not gonna do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore. I can’t spiritually afford it."

Closing out her vulnerable Tumblr update, Halsey said she thought often during the earlier days of her health journey about getting better so she "could come back and be a part of this again." Now, they're not so sure.

"I want to crawl in a hole and I regret coming back," she said.

Shortly after penning the post, Halsey shared another.

"I'm a person," she said, in part. "Not a character in a music video."

"Lucky," released last week, contains an interpolation of the Spears song of the same name in its chorus. The Gia-helmed video was quickly drawn into headlines related to critical comments attributed to Spears, though the singer later expressed "love" for Halsey and said "that was not me on my phone" at the time of the widely headlined remarks.
