Ferg on Current Status of ASAP: 'It’s a Thing of the Past'

The spirit of ASAP lives on, but the collective itself is done.

ASAP is “a thing of the past,” per Ferg.

The status of the collective was brought up during the Darold artist’s recent 56-minute chat with Touré, who last year made headlines due to his reporting on Ye’s Bully sessions. Asked directly whether he was currently “in ASAP,” Ferg gave a thoughtful response that both honored the past while keeping eyes on the future.

“Well, I don’t think there is ASAP anymore,” Ferg said. “There’s not a Cozy Tape out, a new one. Or there’s not an office, there’s not a record label, ASAP Worldwide. There’s not a record label. I think it’s a thing of the past.”

Ferg continued, “I think people hold onto the legacy that we created and those things but when you think about ASAP, I think from the music point, you think about me and Rocky who did the music and all of that. Of course, it was built off the backs of Bari and Yams and all of that but we’re the faces.”

Ferg added that he still speaks with Rocky and others from the ASAP crew, though they all have their own “pockets and groups of friends” these days.

“We came together as a collective and we loved it and we’ve grown into these different entities,” Ferg said. “But we came together as a collective to do something positive and create opportunities for ourselves and our family and our friends. So we killed it. We did that for 12 years.”

As seen in the video above, the two’s conversation eventually turns toward the wait for Rocky’s long-teased new album, previously announced under the title Don’t Be Dumb. Last August, Rocky told fans that “leaks and sample clearances” were hindering the intended release plans. In the same statement, Rocky described his aim with the Testing follow-up, saying he wanted to make “the best album ever.”

Darold, Ferg's latest, arrived back in November and counts features from Denzel Curry and Mary J. Blige.
