Listening to Kanye West's "Last Call" doesn't currently have the same exhilarating effect it once did, what with all the reckless MAGA-ing that's permeated the past couple years. Still, what better time than now to hear something about the College Dropout closer from producer Evidence?
In a tweet that has—as Evidence promised—since been deleted, the producer said, "I know it says Kanye did the Last Call beat with me, but all he did was put the just to get by drums on top of my beat. #maga." Talib Kweli's 2003 track "Get By" was produced by West a year before his Dropout debut; it featured West on the unimaginable-in-2018 remix alongside Mos Def, JAY-Z and Busta Rhymes.
Evidence also hashtagged the tweet #maga. Asked by a fan about previous comments he had made about the song suggesting it was more of a full-on collaborative effort, Evidence explained that he was simply "going along with the program" at the time.
"[West] went and had an orchestra come in and replay shit,' Evidence previously said in a 2014 HipHopDXinterview, the same one cited in the fan inquiry Friday. "A musicologist, he really took it to a level I couldn't have musically. Instruments were played on top, he added drums to my drums and he really took it there. I think the version I turned in to him was just as raw because I love the loop and the drum sound of it, but his is really well-produced. So when it says it was produced by both of us, it's well-deserved. I'm not disputing that or anything like that."
West and Evidence share production credit on the track, which also features a classic Jay-Z intro and West's equally classic "Mayonnaise-colored Benz, I push Miracle Whips" line. Now, he's palling around with this idiot.
