Eminem is celebrating 18 years of sobriety, giving fans a look at a recovery program chip commemorating the milestone.
In a post shared to his official Instagram on Monday (April 20), the 15-time Grammy winner, who recently became a grandfather for the second time, showed himself holding up his 18-year coin. In the photo, Em is seen wearing a D-Nice t-shirt from the rapper’s To Tha Rescue era.
“XVIII,” Em wrote in the caption alongside a medal emoji.
Questlove, Big Sean, and others offered their congratulations in the comments.
Em has spoken publicly about his addiction struggles in the past. In a 2022 essay for XXL, for example, he reflected on his personal path to sobriety, looking back on how his relationship to substances changed once fame entered the picture.
“My addiction didn't start in my early days when I was coming up,” Em said at the time. “We used to drink 40s on the porch and just battle rap each other. My drug usage started at the beginning of that first album. I didn't take anything hard until I got famous. I was experimenting. I hadn't found a drug of choice. Back then you went on tour and people were just giving you free drugs. I managed it for a little while. And then, it just became, I like this shit too much and I don't know how to stop.”
After the 2006 death of Proof, a childhood friend, Em’s addiction “went through the fuckin’ roof,” later leading to a near-fatal overdose the following year. Fast forward to 2026, and the Death of Slim Shady artist has been clean for 18 years, a feat celebrated by fellow artists and devoted fans alike.
As for what’s next for Em, Shady Records alum 50 Cent recently told fans he was going to enlist his frequent collaborator to “make some music” for the upcoming Street Fighter film. As of this writing, the status of such plans is unclear.
