DDG seemingly addresses his ongoing custody battle with Halle Bailey in the track “17 More Years,” taken from the Michigan-born artist and streamer’s new album Moo.
While neither Halle nor the former couple’s son Halo are directly mentioned in the lyrics, the chorus finds DDG saying he’s “tired of the court dates” and “watchin’ money go to waste” due to lawyer costs. He also proposes a get-together for his son’s birthday, then follows that up with a plea to “drop the case,” like so:
“I don't wanna fight no more, tired of the court dates
Lawyers gettin’ over on us, watchin' money go to waste
We should all get together on his birthday, light the cake
If we talk, it'll get better, go ahead and drop the case
Used to text your phone, now we speakin’ through the mail
You don't even know I got love for you still
Said you want me gone, is that really how you feel?
Might as well get along, we got seventeen more years”
As previously reported, court documents reviewed by Complex in August showed that the ex-couple and their lawyers appeared in court in Los Angeles for a hearing on their custody and domestic violence-related proceedings. Reported at the time was that the court had acknowledged that the two cases could be heard simultaneously, with orders issued focusing on social media posts about their son, as well as a modification of a prior temporary restraining order.
Deeper into “17 More Years,” DDG argues that his son needs his presence while questioning Ike and Tina Turner comparisons.
“I can't leave my son 'cause he need me in his life
Why you got him thinkin’ that you Tina and I’m Ike?”
Elsewhere, DDG laments the current status of his relationship with his son (“I can’t even call your phone or see where my kid at”) and cites a lack of communication as what he sees as the key issue amid the custody battle.
“We ain't got no communication, that's the main thing
Every time we walk into that court they say the same thing
These judges judgin' me and I gotta stay calm
Still got respect for you, you are a good mom”
The DDG track comes after Halle Bailey let fans know they can look forward to “a story of first love, heartbreak, and everything that comes after” on her upcoming album.
