Chris Brown, following news of his arrest in England on Thursday in connection with a 2023 nightclub incident, has now been confirmed to have been formally charged.

In a press release, the Metropolitan Police Service said that Brown had been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent. This charge, per police, is indeed in connection with the 2023 nightclub accident, which allegedly saw Brown striking a man with a tequila bottle multiple times at the Tape London club.

“A man has been charged following an investigation by detectives in the Metropolitan Police Service,” police said in the latest news release on the matter. “Chris Brown, 36 (05.05.89), who is a US National, was charged on Thursday, 15 May with grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in custody and will appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court at 10:00hrs on Friday, 16 May. The charge relates to an assault, which reportedly took place at a venue in Hanover Square in London, on Sunday, 19 February 2023.”

As previously reported, word first surfaced of an arrest at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester on Thursday. At the time, a rep for the Metropolitan Police Service did not directly confirm that Brown was the individual who had been arrested when reached for comment by Complex, citing department policy. Instead, a spokesperson said only that “a 36-year-old man” had been arrested at a Manchester hotel “on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.”

In response to news of a charge, Complex has again reached out to reps for Chris Brown for comment. This story may be updated.

As of this writing, neither Brown nor his reps appeared to have made a public statement through social media or elsewhere. Brown’s Breezy Bowl XX stadium tour, celebrating 20 years of music, is set to kick off next month. It’s unclear whether this week’s arrest will lead to an interruption in those plans.
