Cam'ron on Jay-Z Relationship: 'I Hope We Good, I Don’t Know'

Per Cam, he and HOV haven't spoken since the B-Sides 2 show in 2019.

Cam’ron is reiterating his respect for Jay-Z while also conceding that he doesn’t know if they’re “good” these days.

Longtime fans of either artist are well aware of the nuanced issues between the two much earlier in their careers, with Cam just two years ago breaking down how he and Hov set the past aside in the name of the latter’s special B-Sides 2 show in 2019. Cam revisited that moment in a Talk With Flee podcast clip currently making the rounds on social media.

First, Cam offered a summary of his time with Roc-A-Fella Records, noting that “shit got a little shaky” once he joined the label. Tensions at the time were largely due to how Cam was handling his business as a Roc artist at the time, at least according to Cam himself, with some of this being suggested to have rubbed Jay the wrong way. Cam, notably, released Come Home With Me (2002) and Purple Haze (2004) through the label.

“Me and Jay spoke on the phone and he said he respected me and I told him how much I respected him,” Cam said of getting the call about joining Hov for the Webster Hall performance in 2019. “I came out and I did the show. It was a marvelous show because nobody even knew that me and him was cool. … It was a really good time just to show everybody could be in the same room without no bullshit.”

But a text Cam received the day after the performance seems to have left him puzzled, even now.

“So he texts me and he says, ‘Yo, that was dope last night,’” Cam recalled. “And I’m like, ‘Yo, man. That was really dope. I appreciate you guys putting this shit to bed and let’s rock out.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, man. See how much shit we could do when n***as stop acting like there’s fake beef out here? That shit slows shit down.’ I’m like, I didn’t know how to take that. I didn’t know what he meant when he texted that.”

As for Cam’s reply, he opted not to get into his thoughts on the intentions of the message, choosing instead to go the route of gratitude.

“But inside I’m like, why would he even text that? I don’t know, even to this day,” Cam said. “I don’t have no problem. I thought that was weird but don’t get me wrong this concert was three or four years ago. I haven’t seen or spoke to Jay-Z since then.”

Cam then again reiterated the sense of respect he has for Jay and his business ventures, making sure to state that he hopes the two are “good,” although he’ll keep it moving regardless.

“Are we good? I hope we good,” he said. “I don’t know. If I see him and we speak, cool. If not, it’s not gon’ make or break what I got going on.”
