A viral video of Young M.A getting her locs retwisted had some fans worried over her appearance, thinking she looked sickly.
The video was taken by celebrity barber @fatsdabarber who responded to concerns first, saying he would never try to “embarrass” her. “If she didn’t want me to record she would have told me,” he wrote on his Instagram Story. “What y’all need to do is just send your prayers for her and that’s that she didn’t have a haircut in a month.”
M.A responded to him, writing, “We blessed don’t let that get to u blooda .. and I told you it was like four months.” At the time, the rapper didn’t directly address anything regarding her health.
M.A later told TMZ, “As many of my supporters know I’ve been dealing with various personal health issues the last few years. I recently was hospitalized and was successfully treated for several conditions. I’m doing better now, will take some time but I’m on the road to recovery and look forward to the future!!!”
She added, “Rest assured I’m in good spirits and everything will be explained in the MUSIC … plus a documentary. Love y’all MAB! Don’t worry I’m good!”
The rapper also posted the message to IG.
M.A has reportedly had issues with alcohol and attended rehab in 2021, according to AllHipHop. And last December, a video of her using a wheelchair in a grocery store also made its way online, fueling fans’ speculation that she isn’t well.
In an interview from 2019, the 30-year-old rapper touched on her issues with drinking. “I couldn’t go nowhere without a bottle of Hennessy,” she told Time Magazine. “It became a little addicting—a habit of drinking no matter where I went. I still battle that, even now. It’s something that kind of runs in my family as well. Sometimes I look at it as an escape, from all the pressure and BS that I deal with. I wanted to speak on it on the album because I know I’m not the only person that has that type of battle with any drug or addiction.”
