After a huge wave of success with his projects Lavender and Molasses, West Toronto-based rapper Terrell Morris returns with “Fortified,” the first single off his EP coming this summer.
Produced by Gabriel Pick, “Fortified” was written shortly after the death of George Floyd. Featuring two distinct parts with equal amounts of rage, the song also references lack of clean drinking water in Flint, Michigan and the poverty cycle.
Morris also plays with themes of unity and strength in numbers. “‘Fortified’ speaks to the kinship of the Black male community. It’s about that sense of solidarity we so desperately need, in order to feel the possibility of progress,” says Morris. “’I need brothers by my side’ as I sing. The B-side on ‘Fortified’ after the beat flip is my telling of our future—considering the current path we’re on and our destructive tendencies as humans.”
Morris recently taped an intimate performance of old and new tracks as part of the TD Music Connected Series. The artist was asked to select a culturally and personally significant locale to tape the set at, and he chose the Toronto bar Cold Tea, a stalwart in the city’s hip-hop and R&B community. Last year, Morris was featured as one of our 25 Canadian Artists to look out for in 2021. Earlier this month, he collabed with DijahSB on their track “Green Line.”
