Magi Merlin Announces EP With "Pissed Black Girl," Shares Music Video

Montreal's Magi Merlin has just announced her upcoming EP, 'Gone Girl,' due out May 27. She's also shared single "Pissed Black Girl" along with a music video.

Magi Merlin is back with her latest track with Montreal label Bonsound, “Pissed Black Girl.” She’s also just announced her upcoming EP Gone Girl, coming May 27.

Following Gone Girl’s first single “Free Grillz,” “Pissed Black Girl” is a tune reminiscent of the peak of a night out. Calling on ’90s house and a big, buzzy bassline, the track is tied together with Merlin’s signature confident and melodic vocal delivery.

“I wrote this song summer 2020. I was made to really look at my identity as a Black woman and what that identity means to the people I surround myself with,” says Magi Merlin about the track. “I didn’t realize a lot of the people I had around me at the time that identified as progressive, leftist and ‘allies’ were not as supportive as they made themselves out to be. Talking with them just resulted in arguments instead of compassion and understanding. This made me very angry and the only thing I was able to do to vent my frustrations and arrive at some form of catharsis was by singing about it.”

She continues to say the track was in part inspired by casual racism in suburbia and other white spaces. “If there is anything I’ve learned from my experiences with ignorant and bigoted people, it is how unapologetic I need to be about my existence. I’m a girl; I am pissed and I’m Black. What about it?”

Suffice to say, Magi Merlin is living up to the hype we envisioned for her on our list of Canadian Artists to Watch Out For in 2022. Check out the tracklist for Gone Girl below.
