During a recent appearance on Mornings With Mero on HOT 97, the Brooklyn rapper explained why she tapped Lanez, currently locked up at the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo for shooting Megan Thee Stallion, for a guest appearance on her newly released album KWEEN. M.A. said that she knew he was a perfect fit for the dancehall-leaning “Gyal Dem Ryte.”

Speaking about the collaboration, Young M.A said she's been rocking with the Canadian artist for a while.

"I fuck with Tory. That's peoples," she said. "I've known Tory for a couple years now, and I've always been a fan of his music."

The rapper went on to explain that she felt Lanez was the ideal artist for the track because of his versatility and ability to tap into the dancehall-inspired sound she envisioned.

"Everybody know, all the bros know: we put on Tory, bam, we go up," she said. "And I like his sound, and I felt like he was just the perfect person for it, because I know he can get in that…bag."

Young M.A also made it clear that her support for Lanez extends beyond music.

"And, you know, I support him. Free that guy," she added.

The comments come as Lanez is serving a ten-year sentence following his conviction for shooting Meg in 2020. Per California prison records, he is eligible for parole in August, 2029
