Gatson, who choreographed Beyoncé's instantly recognizable 2008 music video, addressed long-standing claims that the moves were borrowed or copied during a recent appearance on the Dance Dish podcast. While discussing the video's legacy, Gatson made it clear that the hand motion central to the song's message came directly from Beyoncé's husband.
"Even this here, right [...] I didn't make this up," Gatson explained while mimicking the gesture. "I didn't make this up. Who made it up? Jay-Z."
According to Gatson, the moment came casually during a conversation: "One day, we're sitting just like this. We were talking about what women do when they say, 'Put a ring on it.' And he said, 'They do this,' and then he did like that."
