Gucci Mane has taken a moment to look back at his explosive 2020 Verzuz face-off with longtime rival Jeezy, admitting things could have turned violent if not for his opponent choosing to de-escalate the situation.
During an appearance on REVOLT's Big Facts podcast, Gucci opened up about how close the event came to spiraling out of control. The battle had one of the most highly anticipated hip-hop moments of the last decade when Gucci played his diss track "Truth" and Jeezy did not retaliate over the vicious bars.
"I'm glad he stopped and did what he did 'cause if he would've played 'Stay Strapped' I don't think I could've took it," said Gucci. "I guess he seen the situation and said, 'Let's calm it down.' Because it would've been a volcano, it would've blown up. I was ready to go there. I really was in the heat of the moment."
He added: "I didn't even intend for it to be like that. I didn't intend to go there like that, but then it's like once you get there its like [...] Once I started the Verzuz it seemed like he was more level-headed and calmer than I was [...] I'm dropping diss records, and he's not dropping diss records."
Gucci said that the shift in energy from Jeezy helped cool things down and ultimately changed the course of their relationship. He added that he had nothing but respect for Jeezy and how he handled that volatile Verzuz matchup.
"From then on, it ain't been no disrespect since then," he continued. "I couldn't do nothing but respect it, because if I diss you and you don't diss back and you go there, I respect that… At that moment, you're thinking about the bigger picture. He didn't crash out. That's smart."
Gucci also revealed he's now open to another Verzuz, this time against T.I., and confirmed that the two have also put their past differences aside.
The tension between Gucci and Jeezy began after a dispute over their hit collaboration "Icy" and escalated with diss records, street confrontations, and even a deadly shooting in 2005 involving an associate of Jeezy who was killed during an alleged home invasion attempt at Gucci's residence.
For years, the two traded shots in music and interviews, fueling one of rap's most bitter rivalries. Their feud came full circle when the two ended their Verzuz matchup night with a performance of "Icy," signaling an official end to their feud.
