A fire has broken out on the main stage of Tomorrowland, the Belgian electronic dance music festival, just two days before its scheduled opening.
On Wednesday, videos of the incident circulating on social media showed flames engulfing the massive stage structure, along with thick plumes of smoke rising and emergency vehicles arriving on the scene.
In one video, fireworks appear to go off, though it's unclear whether they caused the blaze or were triggered during the incident.
According to local media reports, emergency services responded to the scene and instructed residents in the area to keep their windows and doors shut as a precaution against inhaling smoke. No attendees were present at the time of the fire; however, up to 1,000 workers were on-site preparing for the massive two-weekend festival.
Tomorrowland, held in Boom, Belgium, is one of the world’s largest music festivals and brings over 400,000 attendees to the country from across the globe. This year’s edition is set to kick off on July 18, with performances from dozens of top electronic artists continuing through July 27.
While the full extent of the damage remains unknown, a festival organizer issued a brief statement to local outlets.
“Our priority now is the safety of our visitors and those in the surrounding area,” the organizer said, per Times Now News.
Festival representatives have not yet released a formal comment on how the fire will affect the festival’s timeline or production plans.
