Watch SZA Interrupt Ashanti's Interview to Fan Out While at VMAs

One of the best moments from Sunday’s VMAs actually happened backstage, when SZA approached Ashanti for what was a beautiful interaction between the two.

One of the best moments from Sunday’s VMAs actually happened backstage. And lucky for us, it was all caught on camera.

As Ashanti was being interviewed backstage, SZA was seen interrupting the proceedings to tell her how much the singer means to her.

As reported by Entertainment Tonight, The “Good Days” singer walked up to Ashanti mid-interview and launched into a story about how as a teen she once waited “like 10 and a half hours” to get her autograph. “I had braces in and everything — I have a picture of us together —Your mom was like ‘you’re so sweet!,’ SZA recalled as Ashanti laughed. “And it was so amazing. I will wait a million years for you for the rest of my life. You’re so amazing...you’re like perfect.”

Ashanti then embraced SZA in a warm hug, before the singer heaped more praise on her fellow songstress. “You been perfect my whole life! I don’t know what you’re doing,” she continued. As the conversation wrapped up, SZA briefly pivoted her attention to Ja Rule, who was standing nearby and observed the whole exchange. “Same to you! You changed my life,” SZA said.

Ja Rule threw up the prayer hands and reciprocated the love. “I love your fuckin music big time,” he said. SZA then tells Ashanti one last time that she loves her before heading off to the awards.

It was clear that SZA was destined to have a good time at the VMAs, and later ended up snagging the Best Collaboration award for her work on Doja Cat’s smash hit “Kiss Me More.” While SZA’s long-awaited Ctrl follow-up remains elusive, the singer has been fairly generous with new music recently, and a few days ago released another new track titled “The Anonymous Ones” that will appear on the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack.
