These, thanks to Twitter, it's harder than ever to get to work on time. A simple check of the timeline after you wake up in the morning runs the risk of getting sucked into a vortex that keeps you from getting out the door to the subway. How are you supposed to pick out what clothes to wear when there's a meme going around what clothes Drake has picked out to wear?
Leave aside the controversy surrounding the notion of "Black Twitter" for a moment. Anyone who has been using Twitter for the past few years ccan attest to the fact that Trending Topics often revolve about the rap world. If a major story about rap breaks, best believe it will become a Trending Topic. (Something that hasn't always been true for other news stories that were probably way more important than rap music.) That's why Rap Twitter is a thing unto itself.
Twitter is pretty fun (and harmful to one's career) everyday. But sometimes Rap Twitter just goes nuts. Those crazy days when it's like the world stops for a little while and everybody's just stuck on the what's-the-latest in rap? There's a scandal! Some new beef brewing! Someone made a fool of themself! Someone's dead. Instead of just throwing in their two cents, everyone and their mother ends up throwing in whole handfulls-of-coins-worth of opinions, jokes, gossip and slander about the day's topic. It's still all pretty much petty change. But if you add it all up, well then you have Twitter at its best. And worst.
Unfortunately, we can't offer any tips about staying out of Twitter's dangerous downward spiral in the morning. You're on your own in keeping yourself from getting fired. But we bring can bring you the 25 Craziest Days on Rap Twitter. Because the Internet has the attention span of a goldfish, and we're sure you'll want to revist all your favorites to remember all the "great" jokes you made.

25. Joe Budden Gets Snuffed By Raekwon's Goons
Date: August 9, 2009
Joe Budden has been on Twitter since it was just a place for you to pretend you and Questlove were old buddies. And Joey has been taking things the wrong way from the very beginning. Like back when he took offense to a Vibe list about the best rappers and made some sideways comments about the Wu-Tang Clan—which of course, Wu's Raekwon then took offense to.
In Summer 2009—when your account was sill unlocked because nobody at your job could even spell Twitter—Joey and Raekwon the Chef ended up having an impromptu meeting in Joey's dressing room during a Rock The Bells show in California. Rae showed up with some goons and Joey got snuffed in the eye. We know this is exactly what happened because Joey went on a live stream right after the incident. Raekwon talked about it in a few interviews as well. Joey's Slaughterhouse brethren Royce Da 5'9" later talked about it in the song "I Hate Your Pants" saying, "Mickey Factz was In the same room with Joey, when he got punched in the eye...I blame it on the skinny jeans cause he couldn't react fast enough." As for Twitter, as news of the incident spread, it was ripe with rumors about retaliation. Thankfully, Wu-Tang and Slaughterhouse later squashed their beef.
24. Kid Cudi Tells Wale, "We Don't Fuck With You Musically"
Date: February 28, 2011
Okay fine, we're totally biased on this one. But come on! "We don't fuck with you musicially" was one of Kid Cudi's finest moments. When he said those words about Wale in Complex's 2010 cover story, it gave Cudi fans something to point to and tell the world why they love this guy: His potent offhanded poetry. Of course, his words became an Internet meme.
Before we get into how Wale responded, it's important to keep in mind that we're talking about the same rapper who once went after a play-by-play commentator at a Toronto Raptors game for noting that Wale "isn't Drake." Wale probably gets angry at his doctor when he's told his blood pressure is too high. Point being: Wale is not great at taking criticism. So how did Wale respond? He brought up Cudi's then recent arrest for liquid cocaine possession. And... the beef was on!
Since both artists were known for using Twitter personally, the fued became one of the first high profile beefs of the Twitter era where we watched responses fly back-and-forth in real time. They eventually squashed it (and by then even Wale was using the "We don't fuck with you" phrase) but it was still fun while it lasted. —Foster Kamer
23. #Things2ChainzWouldSay
Date: May 7, 2012
Our favorite rap Trending Topics are ones where rap lyrics are involved. Why? Because the humor comes from the people being able to imitate a rapper's rap style so well that you could almost see the rapper spitting those lines in real life. 2 Chainz mix of punchlines, braggadocio, and frequent namedropping of high-end brands like YSL made him an easy target for fans to make fun of. Also, 2 Chainz is actually funny.
In May 2012, the hashtag #things2chainzwouldsay provided everyone with a nice reason to not finish any of their work and spend all their time coming up with lyrics. 2 Chainz acknowledged the hashtag, but he didn't sound all that happy when he tweeted, "Haha im glad ya think its dat ez now let me see u write a song...." Later that summer, the hashtag #2chainsback2school appeared and Twitter had another field day with it. They were actually a lot more clever the second time around, but nothing beats the original.
22. Jay Z Responds To Followers For Hours
Date: July 8, 2013
There may be no more ridiculous and maximalist run-up to an album's release than the one that paved the way for Magna Carta...Holy Grail's release. A massive Samsung promotion. A commercial with Rick Rubin that premiered during a game of the NBA Finals. Some of the most bombastic album art direction to come along in a while. But the most memorable part of the MCHG rollout was when Jay—who tweets maybe once every two months, if that—took to Twitter and answered fans' questions for a few hours.
Say what you will about the album, but Jay's Twitter showing was impressive, from #MyLaugh to a back-and-forth with Aziz Ansari about Izod and pasta, to a back-and-forth with strangers about his favorite cereal. Hilariously, Jay even responded to people who weren't tweeting at him. (You can read all of his best tweets here).
Jay left the Twitter stage at 7:09 PM that night after a few hours. While he might not have won over those who weren't crazy about the album, even the most strident of Jay deniers were forced to admit that the guy has charm for days. By captivating pretty much the entire English-speaking world's attention for an afternoon (and then some), he more than proved it. —Foster Kramer
21. Gucci Mane Goes Off On Everyone
Date: Septermber 9, 2013
Late summer 2013, Gucci Mane, rapthugcentric extraordinaire, (you wouldn't call a man who tattoos ice cream on his cheek eccentric? Oh) woke up and in his best Weezy voice decided "Fuck everybody!" What seemed to be a rehashing of Waka and Gucci's endless beef quickly turned into a general supernova of emotions.
First Gucci was mad at Waka, then every rapper on his label, then rappers in general and finally he started airing out the ladies—Nicki Minaj, Ciara, and Fantasia, just to name a few—who allegedly received his Brrr. (Though his tweets have been deleted, you can still peep them here). As if this wasn't crazy enough, the tweets were written in a bizarre, often incoherent babble. For example this tweet: "Just seen. Rocko. Ge ask me. 1 question. All most was. With his maker. Who next. He cried like a hoe. N ran".
Many believed that Gucci was doing all this for publicity (we even wondered ourselves). Days later, when he copped a "hack" plea, people felt he proved them right. But even Nicki Minaj, in her Twitter rebukes, mentioned that this was a deeper drug problem. After two weeks, Gucci took to Twitter again to apologize to all he offended and admit that his drug addictions had gotten out of control. Twitter may have poked fun but a man admitting his mistakes is something to be commended. Best of luck Gucci!
20. #UKnowUAceHood
Date: August 11, 2009
In 2009, the name Ace Hood could only be seen on CD cases buried deep underneath unread mail on bloggers' desks. His name seemed to only stay afloat because his one true fan was DJ Khaled, which must have annoyed rap fans because the release of his single "U Know U Ace Hood" set off what was bubbling under the surface.
Many took to their timelines and began what would become one the most hilarious roasts of any rapper until the Drake/Dada fiasco of 2013, #UKnowUAceHood. The Internets are always ready to cut anyone down to size, and much to Ace's dismay Twitter let everyone know exactly who they thought he was. This lead to one of the funniest sprees of "lets all make fun of a rapper using a hashtag that anyone can contribute to."
In 2011, Ace Hood dropped banger "Hustle Hard" and a freestyle rehashing the debacle. However, these days you simply #knowuacehood when your bezel takes a swandive of desperation on the red carpet.
19. Yung Berg Gets His Chain Snatched
Date: August 25, 2008
Yung Berg is a modern day version of an Aesop's Fable: A cautionary yet entertaining tale to teach us all a lesson in the end. In Berg's case that lesson would probably be that real life will always trump whatever you think you are on the Internet. Between multiple (yes, MULTIPLE!) chain snatchings and several slaps on and off video in 2010, Yung Berg was crowned a clown of the highest order. Just search #yungbergschain or #yungbergshead on Twitter and give yourself a a pretty good chuckle at his expense.
Mind you, these are two separate hashtags from two separate incidents. Yung Berg doesn't matter to the Internet anymore but his plight will always serve in its hilarity. Twitter may have taken on a life of its own, but the real world is the one we actually live in.
18. 50 Cent Tweets A Stock Tip, Gets Richer
Date: January 10, 2011
50 Cent and the word hustler are pretty much synonymous at this point. The mogul has basically turned rap into his side hustle except all his other hustles look like side hustles too. Back in January 2011, 50 told his followers to invest in penny stock H&H Imports. Sure, he may have failed to mention that he owned some of the stock but he was considerate enough to caution them. One sun cycle later he was $8.7 million richer and we were all wondering what we're doing wrong with our lives.
17. Kanye West Joins Twitter
Date: July 28, 2010
Kanye West has things to say. This, we know. But in an era when 'Ye was primarily known by most of the Western World for placing his foot firmly in his mouth post-Taylor Swift/VMAs, nobody could've seen the superstar taking to Twitter and thus, giving himself a streamlined outlet to put his foot in his own mouth. Since then, Kanye's Twitter has been a feed of minddump nonsense (that day he went on fashion critiques) to supremely high-profile sub-Tweets (that weekend Magna Carta...Holy Grail dropped out and 'Ye simply tweeted about Pacific Rim). Mind you, this is someone who once explained, and we quote:
"I DON'T HAVE A F*CKING TWITTER... WHY WOULD I USE TWITTER??? I ONLY BLOG 5 PERCENT OF WHAT I'M UP TO IN THE FIRST PLACE. I'M ACTUALLY SLOW DELIVERING CONTENT BECAUSE I'M TOO BUSY ACTUALLY BUSY BEING CREATIVE MOST OF THE TIME AND IF I'M NOT AND I'M JUST LAYING ON A BEACH I WOULDN'T TELL THE WORLD. EVERYTHING THAT TWITTER OFFERS I NEED LESS OF."
It goes without saying that, when Kanye did join Twitter in 2010, it gave everyone a bit of a jolt. Even more surprising were the sheepish and "aw shucks" demeanor of those tweets, his first one being: "Up early in the morning taking meetings in Silicone Valley." Which was followed by: "Lol I spelled Silicon wrong ( I guess I was still thinking about the other type of silicone ITS A PROCESS!! :)"
Kanye. Using emoticons. On Twitter. If that wasn't a moment for Rap Twitter—let alone social media, period—we don't want to know what is. —Foster Kamer
16. LL Cool J Drops "Accidental Racist"
Date: April 8, 2013
LL Cool J made an awful decision when he recorded a duet with Brad Paisley called "Accidental Racist." The ballad was meant to be a meeting of the minds, it might have worked if the minds hadn't been so damn misguided. In a maelstrom of ridicule, Twitter rose up to let them both know what we thought of their simpleton ballad. Even celebrities like Questlove, Patton Ozwalt, and Judd Apatow let a couple shots off.
By the end of the day, it was very clear that not only would the song get no spins but it was immortalized as yet another victim of Twitter's swift blade of judgment or justice—however you want to look at it. In their defense, nobody needs to hear the lyrics "If you don't judge my gold chains/I'll forget the iron chains" ever again!
15. Joe Budden vs. Esther Baxter
Date: May 3, 2011
You know how sometimes you're outside and someone is having a very loud argument with their significant other and your first thought is, "Yo, nobody wants to see this so please go home" and you cringe? Now imagine that same fight was happening but on the Internet. And not only was it an argument, but it was the worst breakup you never asked to see.
After a year of canoodling and live tweeting their sweet love, Esther Baxter and Joe Budden called it quits and started a massive war of words on Twitter. The fight got ugly immediately—like War of the Roses ugly—and ran full speed into cheating while pregnant territory. Before long graphic photos of a miscarriage, bruise marks, and various other things that really should remain between two people were all over our timelines. A freestyle was recorded and several other skeletons were rocket launched out of the closet.
Twitter quickly realized that we really didn't want to be a part of it. As fun as social media can be, it can get plain old ugly.
14. #unfollowdiddy
Date: May 27, 2009
In the modern rap world, Diddy is basically "old money." He's been a mogul since the Internet was only available in your school lab. When it comes to Twitter, Diddy blazed the trail to a million followers. Back in 2009, when he hit the million mark he, in true Diddy form, released a video for his followers. Unfortunately for him, Twitter had just begun to discover it's true calling: Congressional slander. Thus the masses united to #unfollowdiddy.
The movement raged for a couple of days and touched upon all manners of hilarious reasons to unfollow the "Ciroc Obama." Diddy fired back but once the incident made mention in The Wall Street Journal it was definitely solidified as one of the wildest days of Internet. However, Diddy continued well past a million followers (he has over 9 million as of today) and as always Diddybopped all over the haters.
13. 50 Cent Takes Control of His Twitter
Date: August 28, 2010
Only a short while after Kanye joined Twitter, 50 Cent joined Twitter too. In late August 2010, when rap finally decided Twitter could not be ignored, 50 turned his Twitter from yet another PR live feed of garbage to an actual look into his mind. And what a hilarious look that was!
50's account was fresh made slander. He immediately started gunning for everyone, cracking jokes about Tony Yayo and even his own grandmother. 50 started us at LMFAO and it never stopped, some of his tweets garnered as many as 100,000 RTs. By the day's end it was like, "50 tweets just like us!" But then we remembered, wait our Aunt Sylvia didn't kill our dog with roach spray so maybe we're not.
12. Eminem vs Mariah Carey
Date: July 31, 2009
The only thing worse than relationships falling apart on Twitter are old bitter hookups being rehashed on Twitter. (Actually, all relationships should probably stay off Twitter but that's another story). Eminem and Mariah Carey dating was a terrible idea. Had rap Twitter been consulted prior to this happening, we could've put a stop to it. Sadly, there was no Twitter back in 2002 and Mariah is too much of a diva to listen to us peasants anyway.
It all started in 2002, Eminem let it "slip" on "Superman" that Mariah may have been a fan of the D, Mariah immediately responded with—what else?—shade and dismissal. Then she made fun of him on tour and called him a clown. Then he played voicemails she sent him on his tour two years later. From there, four more years of the worst #whohurtyou unraveled like a tragic opera. (If you're confused by all this, here's a helpful guide to their relationship).
After Mariah married Nick Cannon, Em dissed her again on the song "Bagpipes From Baghdad." Nick posted a response on his blog and at that point it was clear rap Twitter needed to get involved (We even made our own fake Twitter fight between Em and Nick). Many were incensed by Cannon's claim of subtle racism for Slim Shady calling his black wife a whore but overall no one really took Nick all that seriously. Nick eventually deleted the post but after a couple more tracks were tossed back and forth on both sides, he took to Twitter again! Are you fed up with this timeline? So are we. It's safe to say if those two never mention each other again it'll be too soon.
11. Kanye West Convinces Us All to Join DONDA
Date: January 5, 2012
Last year, Kanye West went on a three hour Twitter rant to unveil his plans to create an elite design company called "DONDA." While we were not surprised that Kanye had more creative plans up his sleeve, we were more interested in what made him write more than 70 tweets about his feelings. It was a bizarre move from a guy who rarely opens up to the public about his personal life.
Ye took us way back to the start of his journey with fashion. Then Ye talked about supporting the arts and the legacies of people like Steve Jobs and Alexander McQueen. He then provided a Gmail address so people can email him about DONDA. We're not sure if anyone has ever heard back from Ye, but we've definitely seen signs of DONDA with recent album covers, magazines, and concert series. The lesson here is, when Ye tweets, he tweets big.
10. Lil Jojo Gets Killed, Chief Keef Gets Blamed
Date: Sep 5, 2013
When Chief Keef reacted to the untimely murder of fellow Chicago-based rapper and rival Lil JoJo with a dismissive tweet that would probably make Walter White smirk (You can read the entire timeline of events here), it started an avalanche of discussion that lasted for nearly a month about violence in rap and our expectations and responsibilities as an audience. We usually don't go on Twitter for philosophical debates, we're here for jokes in 140 or less. But once Lupe Fiasco tweeted at Keef, sparking a response that was a downright smack in the face, we were sent into a spiral that kept email inboxes empty and deadlines forgotten.
In the end, we were left with nothing but caps lock rants, 400 misguided thinkpieces, and a "my Twitter has been hacked" plea from Keef. Later, Keef allegedly morphed into a publicist and started tweeting Gandhi-esque quotes on his account, sending the Twitter world into a collective rage and confusion.
Once the strong feelings that Keef's callousness had incited morphed beyond his questionable morals and into the violence in Chicago, there was no hope for the day to return to normalcy. The whole unfortunate comment sparked a conversation that was probably long overdue and nobody is likely to forget this for quite some time.
9. Watch The Throne & Take Care Leak
Date: Aug 9, 2011 (WTT) / Nov 7, 2011 (Take Care)
Obviously, Twitter is excitable (just look at this list!) but one thing that really sends it cartwheeling across the playground with no pants on is album leaks. Album leaks spread like wildfire through the Internet and with Twitter speeding up the amount of time you spend sifting through dead links, every leak is more glorious than the last. Just think, if you're lucky you can tweet that one lyric before others even hear it. Or, you can share in that "living room" experience of listening to an album for the first time with everyone you know (on Twitter).
Here's a tale of the two most anticipated albums of 2011 and how they changed the way we consumed music: Kanye West and Jay Z's Watch The Throne album was the leak we were all salivating for. Both artists' previous albums had leaked, and with all the secrecy around the album listenings it was a leak that would've definitively shut down the Internet. When hackers took over Mike Dean's timeline post-release to let folks know they could've leaked the album a month before but chose to respect the rap gods, the Internet all took a pause. Had we become so thirsty that we had missed the point of waiting for an album? Hackers had more dignity than us!
A few months later, Drake's Take Care leaked and set the Twitter world into a frenzy. The rapper responded on Twitter with the kind of grace that would make a British royal faint. First, "I'm not sure if the album leaked. But if it did thank god it doesn't happen a month early anymore." And then, "Listen, enjoy it, buy it if you like it...and take care until next time." With a few words, he let us know that above all, good music is all that matters.
8. Kat Stacks Claims Soulja Boy Is A Cokehead
Date: August 25, 2010
In 2010, Kat Stacks ushered in a new era of exposing rappers by taking to WSHH. Using her Twitter for the assist, @IHateKatStacks let her DMs fly in hopes they would return with many a book/TV deal. We could talk all day about which rapper got it the worst but nobody was prepared for her video from inside Soulja Boy's Atlanta hotel room showcasing a mound of what she claimed was cocaine.
Rap as whole is pretty loose when it comes to recreational drugs but coke remains on that list of drugs that is not acceptable in public (might be that whole crack era/birth of rap coincidence) and with visual proof, Twitter set to an uproar. Soulja let his hate for Kat spew right off of his timeline and denied all claims.
However, there are always three sides to every story and while Kat might have been amusing, a woman who turns on her lovers for a cash payout is not exactly a trustworthy source. A year later she would confess that she lied about the whole thing but that didn't take anything away from the motherly advice the Internet had for Soulja: Yo ass shouldn't have been there in the first place.
7. Old Rapper Tweets Resurface
Date: June 24, 2013
The Internet not only doesn't forgive, it also doesn't forget. Once Twitter unveiled advanced search features, user @SargeWP did the work for us and found old tweets from rappers talking shit about other rappers (you can read some of the best tweets here). Unless you were unclear, most of what Twitter does is...well...talk about people.
Since Twitter is the largest lunchroom table in the world, no mercy was spared. Some rappers fired back with nonchalance and some, like Iggy Azalea, went on Twitter to say that the past should be left in the past. Either way, life happens real fast and your target today might be your homie tomorrow. Hopefully, they'll have a good sense of humor.
6. Rick Ross Gets Exposed As a Former Corrections Officer
Date: August 15, 2012
Rick Ross is like...The Mother Goose of Rap. He's on top of the game by weaving fantastical tales that make thugs cry. Did we all know that Noriega probably didn't owe him a hundred favors? Absolutely. But who really tells the truth in rap? More importantly, who cares? It's safe to say that we now know not all rappers were drug dealers.
Rick Ross has always been a cause of debate due to his overzealous tales of being a don but when website Smoking Gun released proof in 2008 that Ross had been a corrections officer in his pre-rap days, well that was just too much. As the story continued to unfold, rap fans were enraged though not shocked.
Years later, when Rozay finally admitted in a Rolling Stone article that he was indeed a former CO, we're pretty sure everyone repeated exactly what they had originally said. Rap has traditionally always been a culture that does not really get along with the cops and this was no different but it does not seem to have stopped the Teflon Don's MMG empire. A good story is still a good story!
5. Frank Ocean Comes Out
Date: July 4, 2012
When Frank Ocean dropped hisnostalgia, ULTRA mixtape in 2011, we knew the crooner was special from his ability to make you weep like he was Keith Sweat but simultaneously remain true to his Odd Future roots by just being weird, in the best sense. With his modern and refreshing look at love in the time of Coachella, Frank quickly became a star.
So when he chose to come out about his sexuality to fans via a letter on his Tumblr, the entire world paused. Not only was it mind-blowing to read such an honest account of love, but nobody in the world of rap or R&B ever comes out willingly. Many say Frank's hand was played by bloggers who had heard his debut album Channel Orange and were poised to expose his non-traditional love stories but what mostly mattered was that he had said it.
As Twitter became ensconced in a bitter battle about his sexuality (he claimed no titles and has refused to do so) and whether or not it was a publicity stunt, the worst of many came out as well. However, despite all the wild and just offensive comments there was a sense of a new era. Our generation prides itself on breaking out of many old ways. Frank defied something unspoken and became a hero for many. To us, his real win was simply speaking up on his own terms.
4. Twitter Reacts to Kendrick Lamar's "Control" Verse
Date: August 13, 2013
Summer 2013 isn't going to go down as one of the most exciting summers rap has ever seen. Hell, the most exciting and spontaneous thing to happen at Summer Jam was a guest appearence by Papoose. But who would've thought it'd be Kendrick Lamar, on a track with Big Sean and the missing-in-action Jay Electronica (of all rappers!) that would deliver the most exciting rap moment of the summer? K-Dot's "Control" verse was a stop-you-in-your-tracks ferocious stunner of a performance, the highlight of which was when he namedropped every major popular rapper out right now, including those on the song with him.
Twitter went fucking bananas. Memes started popping up everywhere. People were @'ing the rappers mentioned, trying to get them to respond. Nobody knew how this was supposed to be taken. Was it a joke? Was he serious? And what was all that "King of New York" shit about? He can't be serious, right? Why didn't Big Sean just pour Kool-Aid all over the recording console? Will Jay Electronica ever come out of hiding again? A COMPTON RAPPER JUST CALLED HIMSELF THE KING OF NEW YORKASDFGHJdfghjklk*&%^TUYGKHJB.
The entire thing was hysteria. And hysterical. It was also, no doubt, a moment of salvation: Like a cloudburst over a dried up desert of boring-ass typical rapper things done by typical-ass rappers, Kendrick Lamar stepped completely out of pocket, and single-handedly delivered the first truly amazing thing to happen in rap all summer, and—while only time will tell—maybe even all year. —Foster Kamer
3. Chris Brown & Drake Throw Bottles In the Club
Date: June 14, 2012
In June 2012, Drake and Chris Brown got into a fight at a club and revamped everything we knew about bottle service. After the fight, Breezy took to his Twitter account to let off steam about what happened. Once the story hit the webs at dawn it was only a matter of getting the coal out of our eyes before light-skinned jokes began to fly. Tony Parker was there? EVEN BETTER.
As the hours ticked by, Meek Mill's name got into the mix and hip-hop took the road well-traveled into misogyny claiming subliminal ownership (or non-ownership) of one pop star's cake (Hint: It starts with "Rih" and ends with "anna").
This of course lead to Twitter inquiring about how good Rihanna's goody must be to have started all this, but in truth it was nothing but a conflagration of egos, timing, and aerodynamic weapons. Mostly we were all shocked because who knew Drake and Chris had it in them?! Actually, don't answer that.
2. Lil Wayne's Health Scare
Date: March 16, 2013
Earlier this year, we all learned just how much Weezy means to us when TMZ tweeted on a Friday night that he was near death after suffering from seizures. We were all glued to our Twitter as conflicting reports continued to roll out about Weezy's ever worsening condition, to the point where he was allegedly being given his "last rites."
Once it seemed that we really might lose Wayne, everyone jumped in with prayers, love, and opinions. It's one thing to hear someone may have passed, but it's another thing to be updated about their last breaths. Luckily, YMCMB members took to the tweets to correct all reports. Wayne had suffered seizures but was in stable condition, watching sports just like the rest of us. Many denounced the media for their treatment of the situation and for causing chaos. But for once, it was nice to have a crazy rap Twitter day that ended in good news and remind us that yes we're slanderous, opinionated jokesters but we love our Weezy all the same.
1. Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift at the VMAs
Date: September 24, 2009
In one of the wildest moments in recent television history, Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs and the Internet imploded. On a Sunday evening in 2009, the newly formed Twitter living room sat down to watch the ultimate blog fodder: The MTV Video Music Awards. While all parties involved settled in for a night of zero chill and 100 degrees of nonsense, nobody could've foreseen what the Henny would do to Yeezy.
Twitter exploded in outrage and mirth at Kanye's public outburst and #imaletyoufinish and #ofalltime were soon born. Years later, it may be the most overused joke OF ALL—oh, you get the point.
The 2009 VMAs would forever change the way we watched award shows. By the time Lil Mama invited herself on stage with Jay Z and Alicia Keys, Twitter had already made up its mind: We would never watch an award show without each other again. And making award shows a thousand times more fun is one of Twitter's greatest achievements.
