R. Kelly Atlanta Show Goes on as Planned While Memphis Stop Has Been Canceled

Amid protests outside the Wolf Creek Amphitheater in Atlanta, R. Kelly's concert went on as planned on Friday night. Stationed just outside the venue's parking area, a small group of protesters shouted chants like "Mute R. Kelly," and held signs stating, "Sex trafficking begins here."

One of the individuals speaking out against the singer was former Fulton County chairman and Atlanta mayoral candidate John Eaves. "[R. Kelly] represents the worst of our society,” Eaves said on the microphone, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We’re standing up and saying, 'enough is enough.' … I’m here as a private citizen today. I’m a father, and I don’t want my children to be victim to sexual exploitation."

Last month, Buzzfeedpublished a story alleging R. Kelly held multiple women against their will in an abusive cult inside his homes. The news led to reports of dwindling ticket sales, and a petition urging his label, Sony, to drop the singer. On Friday, the FedEx Forum announced on Twitter that Kelly's show has been canceled, citing "unforeseen circumstances."

It is the singer's fifth show of this tour to be canceled. Kenyette Barnes, co-founder of the #MuteRKelly campaign, took this announcement as a victory for the group.

Of course, not everyone is going to let these allegations get in the way of attending an R. Kelly show. "Everybody has skeletons in their closet," concertgoer Michael White told the AJC. "I mean, I just love his music. I’m not affected by stuff [BuzzFeed] puts out."
