Paul McCartney Jokes About "Wonderful Christmastime" Witchcraft Claim: ‘They Found Me Out’

"This is completely true and in actual fact, I am the head wizard of a Liverpool coven," McCartney joked.

Paul McCartney has jokingly addressed a theory claiming there are ties to witchcraft in his song "Wonderful Christmastime."

In a video for Vevo Footnotes, McCartney made light of the idea that the 1979 holiday classic encourages witchcraft. "There is a theory online that the song is about people practicing witchcraft, getting found out and trying to cover it up," he wrote. "Thank goodness they found me out."

"This is completely true and in actual fact, I am the head wizard of a Liverpool coven," McCartney continued. "Either that...or it's complete nonsense. And you know it's the latter!"

McCartney previously shut down this theory in a 2022 post on his website, correcting those who interpreted the lyric, "the mood is right," as "the moon is right."

"It's 'the mood'! This is the mood; I've gathered together the witches and wizards... I've got 'the mood,' which is what we in wizardry call it," he said, laughing. "The thing is about this stuff, it's so easy to convince half the people in the world. You do have to be a little bit careful!"

McCartney explained that he was thinking about Liverpool Christmas parties and trying to "capture that party aspect" while writing "Wonderful Christmastime."

"'The mood is right, let's raise a glass, the spirit's up' — you know, all the stuff you do at Christmas," he wrote. "Particularly with my old Liverpool family parties."
