Yung Joc knew that wearing a pressed hairstyle on former game show Hip Hop Squares would garner a reaction.
The rapper and radio host spoke about his viral 2010s looks on the Tuesday (June 9) episode of T.I.’s podcast ExpediTIously. Around the nine-minute mark of the episode below, Joc recalled debuting a new hairstyle on Hip Hop Squares, which T.I. also appeared on.
At the time, Joc wore pressed hair and occasionally dyed it, which led to jokes from fellow rappers like Lil B.
“I had got wind of who all was going to be on [the episode]. I was like, ‘Oh, it's some people who going to talk some shit,’” Joc said, adding that he knew the look would “shut the internet down.”
Joc said he asked his hairstylist to press his hair to the point that he could “rake my hair over.” The former Bad Boy Records artist knew the hairstyle “worked” thanks to T.I.’s reaction.
“The minute I saw you, your eyes was so big. You like, ‘Boy, what the hell you doing?’” Joc recalled. “That's the reaction I needed from the people.”
Joc added that he learned to “create a lane” for himself.
“Most people don't know their lane ‘cause they don't really understand their strengths,” he explained.
On Hip Hop Squares, others joked that Joc looked like a cast member of Hairspray and a ‘70s vocalist.
Elsewhere, around the 28-minute mark, Joc said that he didn’t have his hair permed and never wore a 27-piece weaving system but eventually dyed his hair.
“I had to do it—wet the shit to turn back into regular Yung Joc,” he said, adding that he eventually stopped pressing his hair because it “looked real crazy.”
