R&B veteran and actor Tyrese Gibson put on a Marvin Gaye-esque tribute while performing the national anthem" during the Dallas Cowboys vs. Los Angeles Rams game on Sunday (August 11). But to some viewers, Gibson's take on "the Prince of Soul" fell flat.
Shortly before the game started, Gibson sang the "Star Spangled Banner" in a manner similar to Gaye's 1983 NBA All-Star Game version. But the singer went all-out in tribute to the late soul icon, wearing a false beard, a wig, and a beanie, taking his Gaye rendition to the extreme.
One X account posted that Gibson "failed miserably" at honoring Gaye, which the 1992 actor shrugged off via Instagram.
"Thank you…… You’re always welcome here….. respectfully I don’t really know if I agree," he began. "Few bad notes? Mheeeee that’s an open mic for you….".
"God is the greatest we live in the best county in the world and I really really tried," he continued.
The "Lately" vocalist concluded the post by likening himself to Gaye and other legendary R&B acts, writing, "Teddy-Marvin-Donnie-Wonder-Gibson is my name.."
While Gibson continues to homage R&B greats in a unique way, here's a little-known NFL fact: Gaye once tried out for the Detroit Lions in July 1970.
