While celebrating his 37th year and over a decade of sobriety, Mike Posner reflected on his 2015 hit, "I Took a Pill in Ibiza," and how much he's grown since its release.
On Wednesday (July 30), the pop singer-songwriter shared a post on X, formerly Twitter, about the song with references to late Swedish producer and DJ Avicii. The musician died by suicide in April 2018 at 28 years old.
"On my 26th birthday, i wrote I Took A Pill in Ibiza...11 years ago. The song became popular several years after i wrote it," wrote Posner, who celebrated his 37th birthday in February.
"This year I celebrated my 37th birthday. I feel proud to look at the song lyrics and know that NONE of them are true anymore," he continued.
Posner said he's grown into a "completely new man" that he's "proud" of being and wrote a hypothetical dialogue between versions of himself at 26 and 37 years old.
"26: 1 took a pill in Ibiza to show Avicii I was cool and when I finally got sober, felt 10 years older, but fuck it, it was something to do," Posner wrote.
Posner said that at 37, "I love myself more than ever, no longer do shit that harms my body to try to get people to like me."
While the artist copped a sports car before writing "Ibiza" to prove that he's a "real big baller" while living in Los Angeles, he said he recently donated his "massive Jordan collection" and doesn't need to "prove anything to anyone."
While his younger self feared being "all alone," he said he has now "spent a decade creating a community of the most loving high powered friends in the world." The relationship with his mother and sister is also the "best it's ever been."
Posner also recognized his successful walk across America, climbing Mount Everest, and overcoming his sadness to "teach others to do the same."
"I love you. If you're going through shit right now, keep going, you have no idea how good your life may be in 10 years," he concluded.
Posner originally posted the thread on TikTok last February, but it continues to resonate with his followers, some who confessed to having their own personal struggles.
"I Took a Pill in Ibiza" topped Billboard's Pop Airplay chart upon its release but was controversial as the island's tourism authorities disapproved its depiction of drug use.
