Mariah the Scientist has spoken out about the criticism she receives for her relationship with Young Thug.

The couple began dating around the time they collaborated on 2021 song "Walked In," and Mariah proceeded to support Thug throughout his YSL racketeering trial, which ended in the rapper being acquitted.

Mariah, who released her fourth album Hearts Sold Separately, on Friday (August 22), discussed dating the Atlanta rapper in a new interview with Associated Press, as well as the judgment that comes with it.

"Even the fact that I do talk about it, they get mad about it, you know?" she said. "And in this song that I have with Kali Uchis ["Is It a Crime"], I feel like I talk about it. It's like, you want somebody to understand."

She continued: "Everybody acts like they want love, and they want love for other people. And it's like, realistically, if that were the case, people wouldn't be so judgmental about what everybody is doing."

"And I think at this point, I'm used to people scrutinizing my relationship," she admitted. "It's almost like I expect them to do that. I also don't want it to have such a heavy impact on my opinion on him or us to the point where it makes me not want to do it."

The singer added that she wants to "actively decide" on the relationship for herself and decide if it's something that's "serving" her or not. "It's definitely been a process," she concluded. "But I like to talk about it. I feel like it's therapeutic to make music about it."

Earlier this month, Mariah shared her admiration for Thug as the father of six children, and encouraged child-free women to date parents to explore their maternal nature.

"I feel like dating somebody with kids has taught me more about a family unit than anything I could have ever imagined because you're seeing it in real time," she said around the 31-minute mark of her interview with Hot 97 below. "You're seeing the ins and outs of parenting regardless if somebody is together or not together. Parenting is very interesting."
