Lauryn Hill and her sons YG Marley and Zion Marley were special guest performers for the opening of the new Mercer Labs exhibit ‘Football Is Freedom’ last week.
Held on Thursday, June 11, at the Manhattan museum, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill artist shut down Mercer Labs along with YG Marley, the vocalist behind “Praise Jah In the Moonlight,” and Zion. The 8-time Grammy winner shares her sons with her ex-partner, Rohan Marley, who also stopped by the event, along with some of their younger children, like model Selah Marley.
The ‘Football Is Freedom’ launch event was held the evening before its official opening on Friday, June 12. With guests spanning music, art, culture and sport, visitors were given a first look through the museum’s 15 multi-sensory experimental spaces, co-curated by Mercer Labs co-founder Roy Nachum and the Marley family.
With dynamic lighting and motion that reflect the intensity of a football game, ‘Football Is Freedom’ captures the lifelong relationship between late reggae icon Bob Marley, father of Rohan Marley, and the popular sport.
"Football is one of the few places where hierarchy disappears — everyone becomes equal once the ball touches the ground. That mirrors everything Bob Marley stood for,” Nachum said in a press release.
Exclusive curated merch is available for purchase at Mercer Labs and ‘Football Is Freedom’ is available to view from 4 PM to close during the museum hours.
