Former En Vogue member Dawn Robinson has found "healing" in currently living in her vehicle.
In March, the R&B singer posted a YouTube vlog where she opened up about living in her car for the last three years after previously experiencing chaotic housing arrangements. In a new interview with People, Robinson, 58, said that she's long been "a road girl," noting that she and En Vogue member Terry Ellis would opt for 24-hour bus trips.
Now, in choosing not to rejoin the legendary girl group, Robinson has gotten comfortable with car life, explaining that people often "don't know the freedom of what it is." In Robinson's car, she has a foldable twin mattress for sleeping. "From the outside, the perception is that it's a very small compact car, and it's not. Inside, it's very roomy," she told the outlet.
Among the difficulties of living on the road are cooking and daily grooming. "It's really just every day having to go into the gym and shower there as opposed to just walking into your own bathroom at home," she continued.
Robinson also doesn't cook but instead eats at restaurants daily with help from her former mother-in-law, friend, and "sister-slash-assistant." Robinson also called living in her car a "very healing time" and expressed that once she's made a "resurgence," she'll be in an apartment or house.
Giving their input on Robinson's financial situation was Jermaine Dupri–who the singer thought was trying to "attack" her–and Robinson's ex-husband, Andre Allen, who offered her a hospitality job. Although she's reunited with En Vogue several times in the last 30 years, she refuses to officially rejoin the group after being replaced and having disagreements over business deals. Robinson was also a member of neo-soul trio Lucy Pearl with Raphael Saddiq and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
