Amber Rose thinks she might have been to blame for Ye interrupting Taylor Swift’s speech during the infamous speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
Rose, who dated the rapper-producer known as Kanye West from 2008 to 2010, recounted West’s inebriated speech on the Tuesday (May 5) episode of podcast Ball In the Family. The media personality and socialite claimed to have hyped up the BULLY artist before they attended the awards ceremony, where they both took swigs from a bottle of Hennessy.
“I'm like, ‘Babe, you got that bottle of Hennessy upstairs,” Rose said around the 4-minute mark of the podcast below. “‘You a superstar. You need to get the Henny. We need to be taking shots of Henny on the carpet.’”
“‘You the biggest thing in the whole world,’” she continued. “I’m hyping him up. He’s like, ‘Yeah, yeah, let me go get the Henny.’” “But that's how I am as a girlfriend. And it kind of backfired because all of a sudden, I'm just sitting there and then he's on stage and I'm like, ‘Oh, shit,’ I was not expecting that.’”
During the event, West took the microphone from Swift, who was 19 years old, after she accepted Best Female Video for “You Belong With Me,” which he thought should have gone to Beyoncé for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It.)” The moment is considered one of the wildest in VMA history and ignited years of hostility between West and Swift.
“That’s naturally Kanye’s personality,” Rose further explained. “Do I agree with how he did it? No. But was he right? Yes. That's how I feel.”
Rose said that she had spoken to The Life of a Showgirl musician following the VMAs and said she’s been kind to her oldest son, Sebastian, whom she shares with ex-husband Wiz Khalifa.
“She sent us a big box of all her merch and sent us tickets to a concert,” Rose said. “She understood that it wasn't me that did it. And I think we all got older and we learned from our mistakes.”
“She's engaged now. We have kids. Kanye has kids. I have children now. At that time, we all didn't have kids or anything. We were just young and just winging it,” Rose added.
