After reports of it being canceled (and uncanceled) on several occasions, it appears organizers have not given up on pulling together Woodstock 50.
On Monday, Town of Vernon Supervisor Randy Watson told the Poughkeepsie Journal that the festival's organizers have formally applied for a permit to hold the event on Aug. 16-18. The applications requests to use the area of Vernon Downs in Oneida County, NY. Although this is good news for those hoping to commemorate Woodstock's 50th anniversary, the proposed area is a step down from the festival's initial site.
Originally, Woodstock 50 was supposed to be held at the Watkins Glen International race track which has the capacity to accommodate 150,000 people. Yet after running into a litany of issues, the festival is now looking at Vernon Downs which can hold just 45,000-50,000 attendees. Though this is just a third of the planned turnout, the fact organizers found a venue to host the troubled festival is an amazing feat. But, like past reports, this news has been tainted with confusion.
The Poughkeepsie Journal reached out to decipher this mystery, but reps for the festival did not issue a response. Also, with a little under 2 months before the proposed dates, it is unclear how the smaller venue will impact those expected to perform at Woodstock 50.
