Lil Durk released a remix to Logic’s suicide prevention song “1-800-273-8255” on Thursday. Since dropping “1 (773) Vulture,” a song that deals with Durk’s relationship with the street life and the dangers he’s faced, he is getting criticism for his lyrics.
Some people think he’s disrespecting suicide victims and survivors by talking about homicide. In his Auto-Tune croon, the Chicago rapper sings lyrics such as “teachers said I might be dead cause I love the streets” and “I ain’t really trying to die today.” He adds another unsettling image with this line: “My momma had a dream about me dying / I told her I hope she lying.”
To clarify his intentions, he shared this message on Twitter:
The reactions to Durk’s song have swayed on both sides. Overall, his fans seem to agree that he and Logic have entirely two different songs.
Logic helped to propel his song to the mainstream when he performed it at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards alongside featured guests Alessia Cara, Khalid, and 50 suicide-attempt survivors.
“I’m not the first person to talk about [mental health]. But nobody has been able to do it on such a mainstream, in-your-face level. I’m happy I can be that guy,” Logic told Billboard.
As for Durk, the remix serves as an official teaser for his upcoming project, Signed to the Streets 3, which is slated for 2018.
