Two days ago, after much delay, Lil Wayne dropped his DJ Drama-hosted Dedication 4 mixtape. The fourth installment in the series comes on the heels of two mixtapes that solidified him as one of rap's best, and one (Dedication 3) that helped introduce new stars like Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Tyga. On Dedication 4, Wayne is accomplished but faces a new sea of critics. Since serving an eight-month prison sentence for gun possession, Weezy's sold a million records in one week for the second time, but he's also been sharply criticized for the perceived drop in quality of his music.
Dedication 4 was supposed to be the final test of Lil Wayne's current relevance. It was expected that this mixtape would either confirm that "Mixtape Weezy" is dead, or make him everyone's favorite rapper again. Instead, what it really does is assure us that Lil Wayne still enjoys drugs, having lots of sex, and is truly fond of skateboarding and his line of skate apparel, Trukfit. He isn't going anywhere, whether you like it or not.
