Premiere: Calgary's Victory Taps Ottawa's City Fidelia for Self-Love Track "Chosen"

Rising Calgary artist Victory has linked up with Ottawa rapper City Fidelia for a rousing, empowering new track, “Chosen," which takes cues from Daft Punk.

Rising Calgary singer-songwriter Victory has linked up with Ottawa rapper City Fidelia for a glorious new track, “Chosen.”

The melodic tune, produced by NeverHeardTay, SLWJMZ, and Perotti, takes cues from Daft Punk and ’90s R&B and hip-hop, giving it a nostalgia-heavy vibe. Victory kicks the track singing a heartfelt verse about “holding out for some better days,” before Fidelia taps in with a melodic verse of his own about being “all in.” The two artists end up pulling off some hair-raising harmonies.

“I first started writing chosen from the perspective of wanting to be chosen by someone because I feel like that’s what a lot of people want,” Victory says of the inspiration behind the song.

The songwriting process wasn’t without its challenges. “I kept hitting roadblocks; for some reason I couldn’t write the song. I rewrote it so many times nothing was working. Then I realized I was approaching it completely wrong,” she says.

“What a lot of people, including myself, don’t realize is before the ‘right person’ can choose you or before you can receive any kind of healthy support or care from a loved one or friends, you first have to choose yourself. Once I saw it from that perspective the song pretty much wrote itself and I knew exactly what instruments [and] vibes I wanted the song to give off,” Victory shares.

“Victory’s melodies and lyrics really made me think about a time in my life where I had to let go of a girl I was dating to allow her to realize that I am the real deal,” says City Fidelia. “I truly believe that things will fall into place naturally when you are chosen.”

Victory is a Honey Jam alumni who has gained a following making cover videos via Instagram and TikTok. The singer-songwriter first gartered national attention with her independently released single “Up,” which was placed in rotation on CBC Radio 1 and CBC Music.
