Released in January 2000, Voodoo marked D'Angelo's return after his 1995 debut Brown Sugar. The album took nearly five years to complete, with D'Angelo and the Soulquarians—a collective that included Questlove, J Dilla, James Poyser, and Pino Palladino—spending hundreds of hours at Electric Lady Studios in New York. The sessions were loose and live, with the band recording entire takes instead of building tracks piece by piece.

In a 2000 interview with Rolling Stone, Questlove explained the approach: "We'd play for six hours straight. No one was watching the clock. It was about finding the pocket and staying there." That method shaped the album's sound—groove-heavy, unhurried, and built on feel rather than precision. Tracks like "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," "Devil's Pie," and "Send It On" move at their own pace, with D'Angelo's vocals sitting somewhere between singing and speaking.

Voodoo debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and went on to win two Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album. The album features appearances from Method Man, Redman, DJ Premier, and others. It's been cited as a reference point for artists across R&B and hip-hop, influencing everyone from Frank Ocean to Tyler, The Creator.
