Last year, That Mexican OT was mired in controversy for his take on using the N-word.
In a new conversation with Bootleg Kev, the Bay City, Texas rapper looked back on how that moment impacted him.
“It just sucked because I'm not an ill person. I don't got no ill intention,” he said around the 9:35 minute mark in the video above. “I'm not no motherfucker that's trying to lynch y'all. I'm not no motherfucker that's out here trying to be against y'all. I'm from this shit too. I'm from where you from. … But the internet is going to do its job. It's going to make me look like the boogeyman.
“It sucked, bro,” OT continued. “But I think people are starting to understand like the internet made that shit what it is. Like, man, you know, I love these motherfuckers. I mean, look, everybody that see me in person, they ain't ever had no bad interaction. And if they did, I mean, fuck, I'm sorry. It wasn't like that.”
Last year, OT stopped by Angela Yee’s Lip Service podcast, where Yee pointed out that many artists and high-profile figures are much more cautious with their language to avoid career-damaging repercussions. OT, however, insisted he was an exception.
“I don’t think I can get canceled. I can’t get canceled because I didn’t sell my music; I sold me,” he explained.
When fellow rapper Cleotrapa asked him about using the N-word in his songs, OT said he felt like he could use the word, not because he's a rapper, but because he grew up around Black people.
“I’m gonna tell you why … I wish there was some Black dudes in here,” he said before scanning the room and finding one. “OK, we’re gonna use him. What the fuck are you gonna do about it? And then second of all, I grew up loving these motherfuckers. I grew up fighting with them. I grew up eating with them. I grew up fuckin’ doing bad shit with them.”
“Even if I wasn’t related to nobody that was Black, I mean, shit, it’s what the fuck I was surrounded by,” he added.
