Sexyy Red is extremely aware of how badly the police treat Black people in her St. Louis hometown.

“The police in St Louis just shot another Black kid dead the other day. That shit’s so wrong,” she told Dazed. “When I go back home, there are usually two outcomes [when I am stopped in traffic]: they either like your music and want to tell you about their kids being fans, or they choose to mess with you even more [now you’re this celebrity]!”

She continued, “Sometimes they pick on me or just fuck with me for fun. They like to remind you of where you are. It’s all about reinforcing their position [of power].”

The 26-year-old grew up in St. Louis' North County, close to Ferguson. Ferguson made a name for itself after local police fatally shot Michael Brown in August 2014.

A few years later, Big Sexyy referenced the police’s mistreatment of Black people on the 2018 song, “Free Smoke.” She raps, “Ain't no music playin’ but the police say we loud.”

So, it came as a surprise in October 2023 when Red endorsed Donald Trump.

“I like Trump,” she said in an episode of This Past Weekend podcast at the time. “Yeah, they support him in the hood. ‘Cos at first I don’t think people was fucking with him. Like they thought he was racist, saying little shit, and against women. But once he started getting Black people out of jail and giving people that free money, ah baby, we love Trump. We need him back in office.”

She seemed to double down on her Trump support by wearing a MAGA hat during a performance in the summer of 2024. But come November, when it was time to vote, the Hood Hottest Princess artist revealed she voted for Kamala Harris.

“Don't tell us what to do with our coochies!! #Kamala4President,” she tweeted alongside photos of her showing off her “I Voted” stickers.
