Meek Mill is putting Atlantic Records on blast.
The Philadelphia rapper took to Twitter on Tuesday to air out his grievances, saying Atlantic won’t let him “drop music until 9 months after my last album got blackballed” despite making the label “100’s of millions.”
It’s unclear why Meek says his project was blackballed. Expensive Paindebuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart in October, following an extensive campaign that saw album artwork by Nina Chanel Abney plastered across landmarks in major cities across the U.S. in September, which Mill did reference Tuesday.
He also discussed his relationship with Roddy Ricch and how the “label [separated] us instantly when the millions came in from him,” and said Atlantic tried to do the same thing with Meek and Rick Ross. Meek was a huge supporter of Roddy from the outset, with the Compton rapper hopping on Meek’s Nipsey Hussle tribute “Letter to Nipsey” back in January 2020.
“If I didn’t have millions I’d prolly do something crazy,” Meek wrote in one tweet. “They out smarting young black kids taking advantage and calling it business! Other artist speak up and tell the truth while you winning not when you down!”
Complex has reached out to Meek Mill’s rep for further context regarding his tweets.
Meek’s comments arrive as YoungBoy Never Broke Again is making headlines for targeting Atlantic, to which he’s signed as well. “Why black ball me I’m the good guy!!!??” YB reportedly wrote. “I was going #1 two weeks straight with a mixtape so they took it down off the charts. I don’t give a f**k you still can’t stop me don’t sign to Atlantic if you a artist they not gone support you especially if you live a certain way.”
Meek added he got locked out of Roddy’s career, even when he put in a lot of legwork with the young rapper. “They [brought] him to me and cut me out soon as the money came…the label should of paid me not ‘Roddy’ then they fed him like I was tryna lock him in…I was tryna help and eat ain’t get a Dolla from label!” the 34-year-old alleged. He clarified that he and Ricch “good now this not about him at all…they would of let us go to war and made the money still.”
Mill also raised an issue about having to “fight for my life” to get 2016’s Dreamchasers 4 counted as an official album rather than a mixtape, asking, “If y’all made 20 million off it what is it counted as?”
