Fans were shocked when Hilary Duff referenced porn and masturbation in her new song, “Roommates.”

On Feb. 20, the singer and actress dropped off her first album in 11 years, Luck... or Something. A lot has changed in that time, a sentiment reflected in the content of her project, like the single “Roommates,” which features Duff singing in the chorus, “I'm touching myself looking at porn.”

The 38-year-old sat down with the Call Her Daddy podcast, where host Alex Cooper asked how Duff felt about the expectations of her keeping her “squeaky clean child star image” even as an adult.

Duff explained that the song is “meant to be polarizing.”

“I think that probably my initial reaction was like, ‘Oh, they just haven't evolved yet,’” Duff said at around the 1:09:30 hour mark.

“I don't care at all. One of the craziest comments that I saw was like, ‘And do you do that in front of your children?’ And I was like, ‘No.’” She continued, “But guess what? The song is meant to be polarizing. It's not meant to be raunchy or to get attention because of what I'm saying. It's a plea. And I think that's relatable to women.”

While she lamented that she’s “never given head in the back of a dive bar,” adding that “there’s always time,” she said that she took “lyrical liberties” when writing “Roommates.”

“You're creating art. It was important for me that the song felt very polarizing because that's how it feels in a moment of a lull in a relationship, where you're just like, ‘I need to sort this out. I need to get through this. I can't keep feeling this way.’”

Luck… or Something has already topped Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart. According to Hits Daily Double, the album is also anticipated to debut in the top five on the Billboard 200. Duff’s last offering, 2015’s Breathe In. Breathe Out., opened at No. 5 on the US album chart.
