When Bad Cornrows Happen to Good Artists

No artist is safe from a hair fail.

When looking at the evolution of hairstyles in music, one thing is very clear: Cornrows don’t discriminate. A lot of rappers and singers have nailed the style, with everything from zig-zag parts to accessorizing with beads and healthy edges. Then, things started to go left when a few people tried out colored extensions, manufactured baby hair and holding onto their braids long after their hair follicles did. Check out these Cornrow Fails in Music.

R. Kelly

R. Kelly never really could achieve the hangtime (braid length) that would make his cornrows worthy of recognition, so he opted for weave. Not only do these blond braids resemble some sort of metallic straw, but even more tragic is that he airbrushed his hairline to finish off the look.

Justin Timberlake

JT usually looks and sounds perfect, but these lil’ short-lived baby neck braids didn’t have to happen.

Lil' Kim

Lil' Kim has done it all with her hair over the years and gotten away with most of it because she’s the Queen Bee, right? Unfortunately, this cornrows and edges collaboration cannot be excused.

50 Cent

Although they weren’t his strongest statement, 50’s retro cornrows were a little more understandable because they were a part of his role in the movie The Frozen Ground. Thank goodness that was temporary.

Mystikal

Mystikal’s switch to cornrows put the spotlight on his forehead, and that was mostly the issue.

RiFF RAFF

After mixing weave hair with man cornrows, adding artificial color highlights and occasional crop circles is the next violation. RiFF RAFF, sometimes less is more.

Coolio

Everyone loved Coolio’s braids in the ’90s. Here we are approaching the end of 2014 and he hasn’t let go of the style. In the midst of balding and graying, he is still holding on.

Flavor Flav

Oh Flav. Stick to the Viking hat.

Omarion

In his boy band days, Omarion stole the hearts of millions of middle school girls and inspired many pre-teen boys to start cornrows. The biggest fail with his hairdo was not the braids, but the baby hair that his stylist created by shaving off a chunk of his hair in the front, resulting in him having two hairlines before the cornrows even began.

Christina Aguilera

Christina stayed braided up for the majority of 2001 while strutting all up and down various red carpets. There is no denying her beauty and talent, but the medusa ’do was a miss, boo. *cues Migos*
