It’s been a while since a hip-hop parody account really moved us. While Twitter is almost a decade old and we’ve seen everything from the forming of hip-hop partnerships to rap beefs, it’s the sporadic brilliance in 140 characters or less that couldn’t exist anywhere else online that keeps us coming back for more.
Most of us joined Twitter around the time Jay Electronica dropped “Exhibit C” and, while he’s still yet to release an album, the track’s lyrics remain some of the most impactful of his generation. Perhaps the most oft-quoted line remains his signature:
"They call me Jay Electronica—fuck that/Call me Jay ElecHanukkah, Jay ElecYarmulke/Jay ElecRamadaan, Muhammad A'salaamaleikum."
A critically acclaimed couplet, it’s probably what most hip-hop fans first think of when they hear Jay Electronica’s name. The second thing that usually comes to mind is probably how it’s been about seven years since his buzz began and there’s no album to show for it.
In wake of this, the Internet has given us the next best thing. Popping up a few short weeks ago, @FakeElectronica has reworked Electronica’s signature line into some hilariously dead-on facsimiles. Here are our ten favorites.
Chaz Kangas is a writer living in New York. Follow him at @Chazraps.
Cryptic and pointed, it’s a tweet that college thesis papers could be made of.
This one’s as fun to read as it is to say!
We’re surprised no rapper has ever used some of these before.
He’s legendary, so they might actually call him this one.
All jokes aside, the internal-rhymes in this one are downright impressive and show how sharp this account is.
Those things are huge!
This was a really important promise.
Best use of “Lunchables” we’ve ever heard.
Ideally, this gives Jay Electronica the theme song duties for Avatar 2.
His most retweeted and favorited Tweet, this one seems to be the most clear-cut classic.
