Shaboozey has weighed in on the biggest football and music crossover of 2026, and he’s crystal clear about his pick for the halftime stage.

Speaking with Billboard during a Formula 1 event, the country star didn’t hesitate when asked who he thinks should headline. “I think Bad Bunny’s awesome,” Shaboozey said. “I think he’s a global superstar, global icon — and an American citizen. There’s no better choice.”

The Grammy-winning rapper from Puerto Rico has already been announced as the official halftime performer, but the decision has stirred up more conversation than usual. Some conservative voices online criticized the NFL’s move to tap a Spanish-speaking artist for the high-profile gig.

For those still unsure, here are the facts: people born in Puerto Rico have been U.S. citizens since 1917, thanks to the Jones-Shafroth Act. That means Bad Bunny is not just a global artist, but also an American one.

Puerto Ricans can live and work in all 50 states, serve in the military, and vote in primaries when registered in their state of residence. While residents of the island don’t cast ballots in presidential elections, their citizenship is not in question.

Shaboozey also pointed out how the NFL has been expanding its footprint worldwide. “Football’s such a beloved sport — why not take it to other places?” he said, citing his brother Myles Smith’s recent experience playing in Dublin as part of the league’s international schedule.

For him, Bad Bunny’s halftime show fits perfectly with that mission. “Any time a Bad Bunny song comes on, the whole place erupts,” he added.

The conversation around the halftime show has even pulled in other music legends.

Guitarist Carlos Santana recently had to issue a statement after viral posts falsely claimed he opposed Bad Bunny’s performance. Santana made it clear that he fully supports the choice, calling the rapper’s music “magical” and urging fans not to fall for misinformation.
