On a new episode of the House of Aces podcastThe Debut Live, The Game broke down how his iconic 2004 track “How We Do” came together.

The song appeared on Game’s debut album The Documentary, and as he told host Carl Lamarre, the cut came together pretty effortlessly after he mumbled some lines from it in a corridor as he passed Dr. Dre.

“I was walking down this long-ass hallway, and I was like, ‘N***a fresh like, uhh, Impala, uhh,’” he said, rapping what became his first verse’s opening bar. “And then Dre was walking back in the studio, and that n***a was like, ‘Ay.’ I was like, ‘Yeah?’ He was like, ‘What’s that?’ And I’m like, ‘What’s what?!’ And he like, ‘What you mumbling?’ I’m like, ‘Nah don’t worry about it.’ He like, ‘What you mumbling?’”

Game rapped the line again for Dre. “He was like, ‘Let’s lay that,’” Game said, gesturing as if Dre was pointing to the recording booth. “After I got done, Dre was like, ‘Yeah, I fuck with this shit.’ Two weeks later, came back to the studio and 50 [Cent] was on this motherfucker. … And it was at this time 50 was big as a motherfucker, so I was happy about that because we was in G-Unit. But Dre had let 50 get on it, and 50 knew what the fuck it was when he heard it. So he just got on it with me, and that’s how ‘How We Do’ was made.”

The Game added that he was never in the studio with 50 when the song came together, but it’s clear 50 understood what he needed to bring to the track. The two even go back-and-forth on the third verse, which comes after Fif offers his take on the chorus.
