Missy Elliott has made history as the first female hip-hop artist to ever get a nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The 51-year-old artist has been nominated alongside the likes of Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper, and George Michael. Throughout her extensive career, Missy Elliott has won five Grammys, and just last year she was honored with a street in her Virginia hometown named after her. The 2023 induction ceremony for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is set to take place later this year, with a time and venue yet to be announced.
“This is an incredible honor. I’m so humbled and grateful to be counted amongst all the incredible honorees," said Missy Elliott. "I’ve spent my career making the kind of music I love and it means so much to know that I have touched others as well. But to hear that I am the first female hip hop artist to EVER be nominated into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame?!? Wow!! This one hits extra different as I hope it opens doors for other female emcees to be recognized!”
Her manager of over 25 years, Mona Scott-Young, echoed her sentiments. “Throughout her career, Missy has broken barriers and blazed a trail for women in music," said Scott-Young, who is also the CEO of Monami Entertainment. "This nomination is the latest in a long list of ‘firsts’ that solidify her place as one of the most significant artists in music history and a pioneer of female Hip Hop. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop than voting Missy Elliott into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!”
Other nominees for potential 2023 induction in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame include Soundgarden, Warren Zevon, A Tribe Called Quest, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, the White Stripes, Iron Maiden, and the Philadelphia R&B group the Spinners. Joy DIvision and New Order are also nominated for consideration as one group.
