On a recent episode of Joe and Jada, Fat Joe told the story about a chaotic day in 2022 when he bumped into the artist formerly known as Kanye West and went to visit Will Smith days after he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars.
The rapper recalled walking out of his room at a Waldorf Astoria hotel only to bump into Ye, who was standing in the hallway. “I look at him, and he looks at me almost with like a crazy… He looked at me, like, ‘a friend!” he said. “He comes up, I say, ‘Yo, Ye, what’s up?’ I knew my work was cut out for me right [from the] start. He looks at me and, I got a cross on, and he goes, ‘God sent you to me!’ I said, ‘Yeah, Yeezy, God did send me to you. You know you bugging the fuck out?’”
His recollection of the moment sent his podcast co-host Jadakiss into a fit of laughter. “I’m like, ‘I swear to God, I felt like God gave me this moment to talk to Yeezy,’” he continued. “He says, ‘Yo… Nobody’s with me. Not even the Black people.’ I said, ‘Cause you just said George Floyd ain’t shit. Like, what’s going on, Yeezy?’ He was killing everybody at the same time. It was a nuclear bomb, right?”
Joe said he tried to talk to Ye, but he started to talk about his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. He recalled telling Ye about his experiences with an ex-girlfriend, who he alleged slept with everyone that he disliked. “I explained that to give him some humbleness,” he said. “The whole world knows she’s not your girl no more… He hit me up that night and said, ‘Joe, you see? I took back some of that shit I said.’”
The reason Fat Joe was in Los Angeles at the time, he revealed, was that he was scheduled to sit down for an interview with Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith’s wife, just days after the infamous Oscars slap. “I pull up to Will Smith’s house, he comes out, ‘Yo, Crack!’” he shared. “I did the Red Table [interview]... The point is that your man, Will Smith, that shit was like two days later! It was the craziest shit.”
When he got a chance to talk to Smith, he wanted to let the actor, who also won an Oscar that same night, know that he still loves and supports him. “You ain’t telling him he was bugging the fuck out?” asked Jadakiss. “No, ‘cause he tell me he did it on purpose,” Joe replied. “That n***a Will had no regrets, he had no regrets… I hope they do fix it, I fuck with Chris Rock.” Jadakiss laughed that he’s threatened to “unfix” the progress that Smith has made with his public image following the slap, and Joe laughed at the idea.
