After Chance the Rapper was criticized for grinding on a woman and slapping her butt at Carnival, his wife Kirsten Corley-Bennett shared a Maya Angelou passage about people not growing up.

In a post shared on Instagram, Corley-Bennett highlighted a passage from the late Angelou’s Letter to My Daughter. “Most people don’t grow up. It’s too damn difficult,” it reads. “What happens is most people get older. That’s the truth of it. They honor their credit cards, they find parking spaces, they marry, they have the nerve to have children, but they don’t grow up. Not really. They get older. But to grow up costs the earth, the earth. It means you take responsibility for the time you take up, for the space you occupy. It’s serious business. And you find out what it costs us to love and to lose, to dare and to fail. And maybe even more, to succeed.”

In the caption, Corley-Bennett added, “I hope one day, we all choose to grow up.”

While this could just be Corley-Bennett sharing her appreciation for Angelou’s writing, the timing of the post comes not long after Chance was seen enjoying himself at Jamaica’s Carnival. Many fans were quick to highlight that the rapper is a married man, and his interaction at the festival with the woman twerking on him was disrespectful to his marriage. Chance and Corley-Bennett first started dating in 2013, and they welcomed their first child in 2015. The couple married in 2019 and Corley-Bennett gave birth to their second child later that same year.

Earlier this month, Chance announced that he’ll celebrate the ten-year anniversary of his breakthrough mixtape Acid Rap with a hometown show this year.
