Boosie Badazz is being threatened with legal action after saying that he would launch a scholarship in memory of Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old hazing victim who died last month.
The Louisiana rapper announced his plans for the scholarship at his Boosie Bash Festival at Southern University earlier this month, but Wilson's family says they did not permit Boosie to use his name.
Boosie said that some of the proceeds from the performance would go to the memorial scholarship. As reported by WBRZ, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has indicated that she will prosecute the rapper if he goes ahead with the unauthorized plans.
"Caleb Wilson’s parents have advised me that they have not given consent and know nothing about their son’s name and image being used to promote this event," Murrill said. "They didn’t even know the event was happening. They have requested that his name, image, and any reference to a scholarship for him be removed from all promotional materials. I intend to take legal action due to their misappropriation of his name and image to promote their for-profit event. This is not a charitable event."
Wilson's parents had reportedly spoken with Boosie, who told them that he was interested in a memorial scholarship, but that was as far as their discussions went. Murill said that the use of Caleb Wilson's name and image to promote Boosie Bash, a for-profit event, was "disgusting."
Boosie responded to the lawyer and Wilson's family on X on Monday, defending his announcement of a scholarship.
"Its sad for this Lawyer [and] family to say I promoted my event off someones passing," he wrote. "How the fuck can I capitalize off someone death for a concert. That Aint Me.
"I was ask to help the situation n thats what I was doing once I made it home," he continued. "But for yall to say that yall are taking legal action against someone who is trying to help Yall is a slap n my face."
Southern University and A&M College student Caleb Wilson died in February at age 20 after he was allegedly repeatedly punched in the chest while pledging at an off-campus fraternity event.
Per WDSU, at least three people—Kyle Thurman, Caleb McCray, and Isaiah Smith—have been arrested and charged in connection with Wilson's death.
