After over a week since his arrest by ICE in Atlanta, 21 Savage has been granted bond. The rapper is still in custody, despite previous reports saying that he had been released. He's expected to be freed after a deportation hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday, TMZ reports.
"It's a good day for She’yaa and everyone else that is locked up that shouldn't be," 21's lawyer Alex Spiro said.
The rapper was arrested on Feb. 3 during a targeted operation, with ICE later releasing a statement clarifing that Savage was a United Kingdom national.
His lawyers Charles H. Kuck, Dina Lapolt, and Spiro released a statement to accompany the news.
"21 Savage asked us to send a special message to his fans and supporters—he says that while he wasn't present at the Grammy Awards, he was there in spirit and is grateful for the support from around the world and is more than ever, ready to be with his loved ones and continue making music that brings people together."
Roc Nation issued a statement as well.
“We are pleased that 21 Savage was released on bond and will be reunited with his children after his incarceration. We will continue to stand with 21 Savage and all the families that continue to be unfairly victimized by our country’s broken immigration policies.”
Kei Henderson, one of 21 Savage's co-managers, simply tweeted:
Following his arrest, there's been an outpouring of support for the United Kingdom-born, Atlanta-raised rapper. ScHoolboy Q, Killer Mike, Offset, and JAY-Z were among those offering their support. Mic.com put together a video called 21 Ways, a celebrity-driven PSA to show the many ways you can be detained if you're undocumented in America.
Shortly after the news broke, it was revealed that he was currently in the process of getting a U-Visa as a victim of a crime, which would have granted him legal residency in the States. He was detained at the Irwin County Detention Center.
Due to his detention by ICE, Savage missed the Grammys. He was originally set to join Post Malone for a performance of "Rockstar," and fans weren't impressed by Post's lack of comments during the ceremony. He did, however, wear a t-shirt showing his support for his friend and collaborator.
